Court updates on the Thanasis Nicolaou and Marios Demetriades legal cases

On Thursday, the private criminal prosecution regarding the 2005 death of National Guardsman Thanasis Nicolaou was adjourned until September 9. The five defendants are Panicos Stavrianos, Andreas Iatropoulos, Nikos Sofokleous, Christakis Nathanael, and Christakis Kapiliotis. During the hearing, the defense challenged the revised charge sheet and requested clarity on legal costs, preventing the court from addressing substantive issues. Separately, the trial of former transport minister Marios Demetriades concerning the 'golden passport' citizenship scheme was adjourned until September 14. Demetriades and nine other defendants face charges including bribery, money laundering, and conspiracy to defraud. On July 24, the Nicosia criminal court will address defense inquiries regarding potential immunity agreements for a key witness involving the Attorney General. Demetriades maintains his innocence, citing a lack of findings against him during investigations into his tenure between 2014 and 2018.
