Kouris municipality opposes British antenna installation project in Akrotiri
Kouris Mayor Pantelis Georgiou has announced plans for legal action and potential mobilization following a village meeting held on Wednesday regarding new antenna installations by the British Bases administration in Akrotiri. Local officials report that initial plans for a limited replacement of existing antennas have expanded significantly over the past few months. According to current projections, the project involves three phases, with 68 antennas planned for the first phase, another 68 for the second, and approximately 31 to 34 for a third phase. Additionally, the construction of two new buildings and the expansion of existing facilities are planned, contrary to initial assurances that older sites would be demolished. Mayor Georgiou claims that local authorities were misled regarding the project's scope, citing concerns over public health impacts and increased military risk for the area. The municipality has informed the Republic of Cyprus of the situation and expects to receive formal legal opinions within the next two to three weeks. These findings will determine the next steps in their opposition to the project.
