Kourion municipality protests British Bases antenna expansion in Akrotiri
Mayor Pantelis Georgiou of Kourion has announced legal and protest actions following a public meeting held on Wednesday regarding the installation of new antennas at the British Bases in Akrotiri. The municipality claims the project scope has significantly expanded beyond initial representations. While local authorities were originally informed of a plan involving 20 new antennas and the removal of 18, recent data indicates a three-phase project. The first phase includes the installation of 68 new antennas, followed by another 68 in the second phase, with a third phase anticipated between 2031 and 2034. Additionally, the construction of two new buildings and the expansion of an existing facility are planned, contradicting earlier assurances that the current building would be demolished. The mayor expressed concerns over the increased militarization of the area and potential risks to public health and safety. The municipality alleges that the information provided by the British Bases authorities has been inconsistent throughout the process.
