Cypriot parliament rejects urgent review of ministerial tenure extension
On Thursday, the Cypriot Parliament rejected a government request to process a bill regarding a six-month tenure extension for Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, under an urgent procedure. The motion for urgency was defeated with 34 votes against and 17 in favor. Supporters of the government argued that the extension is necessary to maintain the continuity of Cyprus's presence in the European Troika following the conclusion of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. Conversely, opponents, including representatives from DISY, AKEL, and Citizens for Cyprus, argued that the matter requires thorough study and cannot be rushed. Opposing lawmakers criticized the government for delaying the submission of the bill and raised constitutional concerns regarding the creation of the Deputy Ministry. Consequently, the bill will not proceed under an accelerated timeline, requiring a standard legislative review process. The assembly emphasized the need for proper debate without time pressure.
