AKEL leader calls for urgent waste management reform in Cyprus
On Thursday, the General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, visited the waste management facilities in Pentakomo and Kosi to assess the ongoing environmental and health challenges. Stefanou stated that both facilities suffer from operational failures caused by poor planning and mismanagement. He emphasized that the government must develop a comprehensive waste management strategy to address these failures. Currently, Cyprus faces three infringement procedures from the European Union regarding its waste management practices. Stefanou also noted that an investigation is underway into potential criminal offenses linked to the Pentakomo facility. He expressed concern regarding the transfer of management responsibility for the Pentakomo plant to the Limassol District Local Government Organization, effective July 1st. The opposition leader highlighted that despite recycling efforts, a high percentage of waste is still being buried, creating an urgent environmental and public health crisis.
