Political dispute over the Pentakomo waste management facility
The Secretary General of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, recently visited the Integrated Waste Management Facility (OEDA) in Pentakomo to assess long-standing issues. Stefanou highlighted that 80% of waste is currently being buried instead of recycled, noting that Cyprus is facing three infringement proceedings from the EU. He expressed concerns regarding the facility's management and mentioned an ongoing investigation into potential criminal acts. In response, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment rejected these claims, stating they inherited a facility in a state of neglect and dysfunction from the previous administration. The Ministry reported that they have since implemented over 180 contracts for repairs and upgrades to maintain operations and prevent a public health crisis. The government aims to establish a modern, sustainable system with a new contractor by 2027. Responsibility for the facility is scheduled to be transferred to the Limassol district local administration by June 2027.
