Andy Burnham begins bid to succeed Keir Starmer as Labour leader
Andy Burnham, the 56-year-old former Mayor of Greater Manchester, has officially launched his leadership bid to succeed Keir Starmer as leader of the British Labour Party. As of now, Burnham is the sole candidate for the position. He is required to secure the support of at least 81 out of the 402 Labour Members of Parliament. Former Minister for Armed Forces Al Carns, who previously considered running, confirmed on Wednesday that he will not pursue the candidacy. If no other candidates emerge by July 15, Burnham will be confirmed as leader during an extraordinary party conference on July 17. He is expected to enter Downing Street as Prime Minister around July 20. Should a rival candidate enter the race, an internal competition involving party members and trade unions would conclude with a vote on August 29.
