Cyprus plans natural gas exports by 2028

Cypriot Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, George Papanastasiou, announced that the country aims to become an energy exporter by 2028. During the 30th Economist Government Roundtable, he stated that Cypriot natural gas is planned to be transported to Egypt for liquefaction before reaching European markets. The development involves collaboration with major international firms including Chevron, ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies, and ENI. Additionally, the minister highlighted the importance of electrical interconnections with Greece and Israel to export electricity generated from solar energy. Regional cooperation is facilitated through the East Mediterranean Gas Forum and the '3+1' framework involving Cyprus, Greece, Israel, and the United States. These infrastructure projects are intended to establish Cyprus as a key energy hub in the region. The minister emphasized that these developments are critical for the nation's energy autonomy and economic strategy.
