Two hazardous apartment buildings demolished in Agios Athanasios

The demolition of two abandoned, hazardous apartment buildings in the Agios Athanasios district began today. The process concluded a 12-year legal and administrative effort involving the municipal authorities and the Department of Town Planning. Deputy Mayor Marinos Kyriakou stated that the delays were caused by the presence of ground-floor commercial shops and occupants who refused to vacate the premises. The structures had become a site for illegal drug activity and shelter for homeless individuals, prompting long-standing public safety concerns. With the removal of these buildings, the local administration confirmed that there are no remaining structures in the area requiring immediate demolition. The project was finalized after extensive consultations to address the safety risks posed to the local community.
