Deadly wildfire strikes near Almeria in southern Spain
A forest fire that began on the afternoon of Thursday, July 9, 2026, near Almeria, Andalusia, has resulted in the deaths of 12 people. Initial reports from regional authorities placed the death toll at six, but the number doubled as more bodies were discovered, some located inside vehicles in the settlement of Bedar. In addition to the fatalities, at least six other individuals sustained injuries, including one woman who suffered burns and another person treated for respiratory issues. Approximately 50 local residents were evacuated to a cultural center, and road closures were implemented. While official investigations are ongoing, some residents suggest the fire may have been ignited by a fallen power line.
