Political tensions escalate between government and Disy following rejection of European affairs proposal
A political standoff has developed between the Cyprus government and the Democratic Rally (DISY) party following the parliament's rejection of a government proposal for an urgent six-month extension of the term of Marilena Raouna, the Deputy Minister for European Affairs. President Nikos Christodoulides expressed disappointment over the move, contrasting the party's stance with that of AKEL. DISY spokesperson Onouphrios Koullas rejected the criticism, characterizing the government's rhetoric as an attempt to distract from failures and accusing the administration of cronyism, including the appointment of friends and relatives. Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis criticized the tone of the discourse, arguing it contradicts the party's history and demeans a professional official. Letymbiotis further questioned whether DISY leader Annita Demetriou endorses the language used by her spokesperson. The government claims the ministry is vital for effective EU representation, noting the proposal was in line with historical political goals, while DISY maintains their opposition is based on political disagreement and rejection of the urgency procedure.
