Fatal wildfire in Almeria region of Spain

A severe wildfire near the town of Los Gallardos in the Almeria province of Andalusia has resulted in casualties, with reports varying between eleven and twelve deaths. Andalusia’s Minister of Emergencies, Antonio Sanz, confirmed that 150 firefighters are battling the blaze. According to official reports, four victims died inside a vehicle, likely British citizens, while seven others perished while attempting to evacuate on foot outside of designated routes. Another four individuals are currently hospitalized with serious burns. Regional authorities, including leader Juanma Moreno, expressed condolences, initially reporting six deaths before the toll rose during search operations. This event is cited as Spain’s deadliest wildfire since 2005, exacerbated by early summer heatwaves and dry conditions. Authorities have instructed residents to remain in their homes to prevent further loss of life while search and rescue operations continue.
