Parliamentary committee discusses challenges in Cyprus mental healthcare

A representative for mental health patients and their families testified before the parliamentary Health Committee regarding systemic failures in Cyprus. The testimony highlighted that patients often face homelessness or lack of support after being discharged from Athalassa Hospital. Families reported that courts are reluctant to issue compulsory treatment orders unless patients pose an immediate threat of self-harm or violence to others, forcing families to wait until crises worsen. Furthermore, bureaucracy and jurisdictional disputes between ministries hinder the provision of necessary care. The representative also noted significant delays in police executing treatment orders, citing incidents where priorities like hunting season took precedence over mental health interventions. Additionally, the committee heard that child abuse victims struggle to access support when an abusive parent denies the required consent.
