Cyprus Union of Municipalities announces protest actions over funding disputes
On July 10, 2026, the Union of Municipalities of Cyprus held an emergency meeting in Latsia, where mayors unanimously approved a plan for escalating reactions against government policies. A three-hour peaceful protest is scheduled for August 3, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., pending a written response from the Ministry of Interior regarding state grants. The municipalities are demanding that state funding be linked to objective economic indicators to ensure stability, citing the European Charter of Local Self-Government. They specifically noted that the current annual grant of 117 million euros, established in 2021, has lost approximately 18% of its purchasing power due to inflation. Furthermore, the Union rejects government proposals to increase property taxes and impose landfill taxes on citizens, blaming the state for failing to provide adequate waste management infrastructure. Concerns were also raised regarding government interference in municipal hiring, promotions, and service plans, which are allegedly enforced through threats of withholding grants. The protest remains conditional on the outcome of discussions with the government next week.
