Authorities identify three suspects in 2010 Marfin bank arson

Sixteen years after the May 5, 2010, Marfin Bank arson in Athens, which resulted in the deaths of three employees and an unborn child, Greek authorities have identified three suspects. The breakthrough followed an anonymous email received by the police, which provided leads that prompted investigators to re-examine evidence from the original case file alongside newer data. Law enforcement utilized advanced artificial intelligence and specialized software to enhance historical video footage, comparing it with images and materials from separate criminal proceedings. One of the suspects, a 48-year-old man previously arrested in 2020 for possession of explosives and linked to the 2008 kidnapping of businessman Giorgos Mylonas, was identified through this process. Investigators matched his physical characteristics and attire from other case files to the individuals seen in the Marfin surveillance footage. The evidence was presented to the 3rd regular interrogator, leading to the issuance of arrest warrants. The investigation involved the Department of Crimes Against Life, often referred to as the Greek FBI, and the Forensic Science Division. This development revives a cold case that has remained a symbol of political violence in Greece for over a decade.
