New book explores 1974 Cyprus events and Kissinger’s role

Authors Kostas Venizelos and Michalis Ignatiou have announced the publication of 'Guilty', a book detailing the 1974 coup in Cyprus and the subsequent Turkish invasion. Published in Nicosia in 2026, the work builds upon previous research regarding Henry Kissinger’s involvement in these historical events. The authors incorporate new evidence, including accounts from American diplomat James Spain, who served at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara in 1974. A central focus is the claim that an urgent letter from President Nixon to Turkish Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit was never delivered on July 19, 1974, despite instructions given to Spain and Ambassador William Macomber. The book also investigates the activities of CIA agent Gus Avrakotos, asserting that he acted as a key intermediary with Greek junta leader Dimitrios Ioannidis. Through interviews with former CIA personnel and archival analysis, the authors claim Avrakotos exerted significant influence over the Greek military leadership. This publication aims to provide a definitive account of the diplomatic and covert maneuvers preceding the conflict.
