Construction trade unions report illegal use of temporary staff
Trade unions PEO, SEK, and DEOK have issued a warning regarding the rising number of temporary workers in the construction sector. The unions allege this practice violates the Law on Temporary Employment of 2012 (N. 174/1 of 2012), which explicitly prohibits temporary labor in the construction and tourism industries. Representatives claim that this practice has led to unsafe working conditions and is linked to recent incidents in Xylofagou on Tuesday. They argue that some employers are circumventing collective agreements, social insurance obligations, and legal standards. During a recent meeting, the secretaries-general of the three unions expressed their formal dissatisfaction to Labour Minister Marinos Mousiouttas. The unions have warned that they are prepared to take industrial action if the issues concerning labor violations and the use of temporary workers are not addressed by the authorities.
