Eurostat reports on temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens in the EU as of May 2026
According to data released by Eurostat on May 31, 2026, the number of beneficiaries of temporary protection from Ukraine in Cyprus rose to 25,490, up from 24,880 at the end of April. Cyprus maintains one of the highest ratios in the EU with 25.9 beneficiaries per 1,000 residents, trailing only Slovakia at 26.8 and Poland at 26.5, while the EU average is 9.7. Across the European Union, a total of 4.38 million people from Ukraine held temporary protection status at the end of May. This represents a slight increase of 7,795 individuals, or 0.2%, compared to the previous month. Germany hosts the largest absolute number of beneficiaries with 1,283,270 people, followed by Poland with 967,505 and Spain with 267,400. In total, 22 out of 26 reporting EU countries saw an increase in beneficiaries, with the largest absolute growth recorded in Italy, Germany, and Spain. Conversely, four EU member states reported a decrease in the number of individuals under temporary protection.
