Typhoon Bavi prompts mass evacuations in China and Taiwan
Typhoon Bavi is moving across East Asia after causing significant disruption in Japan's Sakishima Islands and Taiwan. In China, authorities have evacuated over 600,000 people in preparation for the storm, which is expected to hit Wenzhou with a population of 10 million on Sunday. Meanwhile, in Taiwan, at least 14,000 residents have been displaced as the island braces for what meteorologists describe as its strongest storm since either 1987 or 1995, depending on the source. Measures in Taiwan include the cancellation of 917 international flights, suspension of domestic flights, and the closure of schools and businesses. Approximately 29,000 military personnel have been placed on standby for relief operations. While the storm is weakening as it moves over colder waters, it remains dangerous due to its massive size, which is estimated to be comparable to the area of France. Separately, reports indicate 15 deaths in the southern Philippines linked to severe storms in the region, though these were associated with a different weather event.
