Typhoon Bavi approaches China following transit through Japan and Taiwan
Typhoon Bavi, described as one of the largest storms in decades, is approaching eastern China after passing through Japan's Sakishima islands and northern Taiwan. Chinese authorities have evacuated over 700,000 residents, including 600,000 in Zhejiang province and 100,000 in Fujian province, in anticipation of landfall near Wenzhou. While no fatalities were reported in Japan or Taiwan, 17 people died in the Philippines due to heavy rains exacerbated by the storm. Separately, rescue operations continue in China following Typhoon Maysak, which caused 39 deaths in the Guangxi region. Forecasts indicate Bavi is weakening as it moves over cooler waters, though it remains a significant risk due to its massive size. Experts link the increasing intensity of such weather events to climate change and the influence of El Nino. Residents in Wenzhou have been advised to stock up on supplies as officials monitor the storm's path.
