Member of European Parliament proposes support for displaced landowners

Member of European Parliament Michalis Hatzipantelas, representing the Democratic Rally (DISY) and the European People's Party, has submitted an amendment to the Common Agricultural Policy report for the 2028-2034 period. The proposal aims to secure European financial support for displaced Cypriot citizens who hold legal property titles but are denied access, use, or income from their agricultural land due to the Turkish occupation. The amendment states that these citizens face persistent socioeconomic disadvantages and intergenerational economic loss. It explicitly requests that the European Commission examine the creation of targeted financial mechanisms for legitimate owners who can provide proof of their titles and the objective impossibility of accessing their property. Furthermore, the text specifies that no provision within the regulation should be interpreted as granting recognition or benefits to the Turkish Cypriot breakaway entity. The DISY party has welcomed this initiative, characterizing it as a significant step in addressing the consequences of the occupation at the European level. The move is part of an ongoing effort to promote national claims through European institutions.
