Status report on the Pentakomo waste management facility investigation
Since December 19, 2023, the Water Development Department has been managing the Pentakomo Integrated Waste Management Facility (OEDA) to prevent a potential health crisis in the Limassol district. Officials reported that the site was in a state of severe disarray when handed over by the previous contractor. Current efforts are focused on immediate operational needs while planning for a new tender by 2027 to facilitate facility upgrades. Concurrently, the Legal Service has forwarded the findings of an Investigative Committee regarding the facility's planning and management to the police. Attorney General George Savvides confirmed that the police are now conducting a criminal investigation into potential offenses. The Legal Service awaits the conclusion of this investigation to perform a final legal assessment. Local government organizations, impacted communities, and the public are seeking both environmental restoration and legal accountability for past management failures.
