Tensions escalate in the Strait of Hormuz following attack on Cypriot vessel
The Cyprus-flagged container ship M/V GFS Galaxy was struck by Iranian fire approximately nine nautical miles east of the Musandam Peninsula while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The attack caused a fire and significant engine damage, leaving the ship unable to continue its journey; one Indian crew member remains missing, while the rest were evacuated to a neighboring country. In response, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) carried out a third round of military strikes against 140 targets in Iran, including missile and drone facilities. Conflicting reports persist regarding the status of the Strait of Hormuz, with Iranian media claiming it has been closed, while the U.S. maintains it remains open for commercial shipping. New explosions were also recorded at the Bandar Abbas port and Qeshm Island. While Iran reported 10 out of 11 missiles aimed at Qeshm Island were intercepted, the U.S. stated the strikes focused on military infrastructure. Cypriot authorities are currently investigating the incident and confirming no Cypriot nationals were among the crew.
