U.S. forces conduct airstrikes in Iran amid escalating regional tensions
On July 14, 2026, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) initiated a new series of airstrikes against Iranian military installations, targeting sites in Shiraz, Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, and other locations. The U.S. stated these operations aim to degrade Iran’s ability to disrupt commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, following reports that Iranian cruise missiles struck two Emirati oil tankers, the Mombasa B and Al Bahiyah, causing one death and multiple injuries. Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, dismissed U.S. claims of neutralizing Iran's military capabilities and vowed to defend the country’s sovereignty. The escalation follows an alleged Iranian attack on Bahrain using cluster munitions, prompting U.S. intervention and preparations for a naval blockade of Iranian ports. Iran has further declared that its memorandum of cooperation with the U.S. is void. Meanwhile, local reports indicate explosions in multiple Iranian provinces, while Iranian state media characterized some incidents as controlled detonations. The U.S. military also reported the first operational use of sea-based drones against submarine maintenance facilities in Bandar Abbas.
