Conference on collaborative housing for seniors held in Nicosia

On July 2, the non-governmental organization '55 syn/plin mazi' held a conference in Nicosia to promote collective housing models for elderly citizens. The event was hosted at the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK) building in collaboration with Frederick University and was held under the auspices of Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos. Speakers, including board members Anna Pafitou and Despo Charalambous, as well as Professor Byron Ioannou, emphasized that cohousing offers a realistic alternative to address demographic and environmental challenges. Unlike conventional apartment living, the collaborative model involves shared resources, communal decision-making, and urban governance based on solidarity. The discussion drew on successful examples from countries such as Denmark, Norway, Ireland, and Switzerland. Participants argued that the state, local authorities, and the private sector should support the development of these sustainable housing models in Cyprus. The initiative aims to provide elderly individuals with options that ensure dignity, independence, and improved quality of life. This event marked the beginning of a formal public dialogue regarding the future of accessible housing in the country.
