Reports of increased military activity near the buffer zone in Athienou
Residents of Athienou have reported the restoration and upgrading of military outposts along the buffer zone near their community. These positions, which have existed since 1974, now feature new installations including metal towers equipped with what appear to be electro-optical or thermal surveillance cameras. Local residents noted that these specific upgrades began appearing approximately a year ago, with Turkish forces citing the need to combat irregular migration as the primary justification. The Cyprus Ministry of Defence confirmed that these actions are part of a broader network of fortifications stretching from eastern Nicosia to occupied Famagusta. According to ministry sources, the installation of these surveillance systems is a reciprocal measure by Turkish forces in response to monitoring equipment previously deployed by the Republic of Cyprus. The government ministry stated, however, that there is no immediate cause for concern regarding the developments in the Athienou sector. The activity remains consistent with a long-term trend of fortifying positions along the ceasefire line.
