President Christodoulides announces 61.7 million euros in new health infrastructure projects
President Nikos Christodoulides has announced an additional 61.7 million euros in funding for public health infrastructure, bringing total government investment in this sector to 206.7 million euros. The new projects include the second and third phases of the Athalassa Mental Health Centre, a new infectious diseases unit at Nicosia General Hospital, and upgrades to the intensive care and pathology departments at Larnaca General Hospital. Additionally, the funding covers new facilities for cardiology and pulmonology clinics, as well as maintenance at Troodos Hospital. This investment follows 145 million euros in previously announced works, which include the construction of a new hospital in Polis Chrysochous, currently slated for completion by the end of 2028 with a construction cost of 17 million euros. The government stated that these infrastructure plans are part of a broader strategy aimed at improving patient care and professional working conditions. Previous delays regarding the Athalassa facility had drawn criticism from trade unions, which emphasized the critical need for mental healthcare development. The government attributes the funding capacity to its current economic policy.
