Paphos commemorates the 52nd anniversary of the 1974 coup d'etat
On July 13 and 15, 2026, the city of Paphos held various events marking the 52nd anniversary of the July 15, 1974 coup d'etat. Commemorations included memorial services at the Agios Theodoros Cathedral, led by Metropolitan Grigorios, and ceremonies at the Makarios Monument. Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis denounced the coup as a crime against democracy orchestrated by the Athens Junta and its local collaborators, which facilitated the subsequent Turkish invasion. Attendees honored those who defended the constitutional order and the Free Radio Station of Paphos, which played a critical role during the events. On the evening of July 13, the Municipality of Paphos organized a tribute event titled 'Memories of that July' at Hani tou Ibrahim. Officials, including Deputy District Officer Euphrosyne Georgiou and Acting Mayor Angelos Onisiforou, emphasized the duty to preserve historical memory while pursuing a peaceful reunification of Cyprus based on UN resolutions. The commemorations also recognized the enduring pain of families of missing persons and refugees caused by the division of the country.
