Cyprus Fire Service on high alert due to weather and recent wildfires
The Cyprus Fire Service has entered a state of high alert following a spike in rural fires and upcoming adverse weather conditions. Over the last 24 hours, the service handled 34 incidents, including 15 fires, 13 special service requests, and six false alarms. A significant fire occurred at 12:55 on Saturday near the Sfalaggiotissa cemetery in Agios Athanasios, Limassol, burning five decares of vegetation; investigators suggest a power line malfunction caused by high winds as a possible cause. Another fire broke out at 14:57 near the community of Prodromi, affecting one hectare of land and damaging irrigation equipment. Further firefighting efforts were required for a third blaze reported at 17:04 in the 'Kampos tou Mylou' area between Orounda and Potami. While some officials attribute recent fires to human activity and potentially malicious intent, investigations remain ongoing. To manage the risk, the Service is deploying aerial patrols, drones, and increased ground surveillance, while urging the public to exercise caution.
