His office initially cited a brief and sudden illness, while preliminary findings from the District of Columbia medical examiner indicated the cause of death was an aortic dissection resulting from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Emergency services had been dispatched to his Washington residence following a report of cardiac arrest. Graham had recently returned from Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday. He had also spoken with former US President Donald Trump by phone shortly before his death regarding the Save America Act. Throughout his career, Graham was known as a prominent defense hawk, a supporter of Ukraine and Israel, and a major political figure in the US Senate. His death drew tributes from both Trump, who called him a patriot, and Zelenskyy, who noted his frequent visits to Ukraine. Prior to his passing, he was scheduled to appear on NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday.
