Update on Cyprus Schengen evaluation and diplomatic events in Paris
The European Commission has adopted the 2025 Schengen evaluation report for Cyprus, following a positive assessment of technical readiness conducted in December 2025. This report, which received support from member states on June 26, 2026, will be presented to the EU Council in September. Officials clarified that this is not the final accession report, and the ultimate decision rests with the Council. Separately, President Nikos Christodoulides attended Bastille Day celebrations in Paris, where a Cypriot National Guard unit also participated. Reports regarding a conversation between Christodoulides and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan are conflicting. While the Cypriot President confirmed a brief discussion occurred, Turkish diplomatic sources denied any diplomatic meeting took place, alleging that the President merely attempted to approach the Minister. Additionally, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a phone call with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss regional developments.
