European Commission appoints special representative for Cyprus

The European Commission has appointed Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto as its special representative for the Cyprus issue to support UN-led reunification efforts. Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou emphasized that any settlement must strictly remain within the agreed-upon federal framework, dismissing media reports of alternative confederation models suggested in The Independent. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric declined to confirm if the reported details in The Independent reflect actual UN plans, noting that the UN remains focused on facilitating negotiations. The Turkish Cypriot side has requested that any future dialogue with Brussels be based on equality and mutual trust, reiterating demands regarding the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot community.
