UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to visit Cyprus in late July
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is expected to visit Cyprus between July 27 and July 29, 2026, to engage in discussions regarding the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus issue. According to various reports, Guterres will hold separate meetings with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, followed by a potential trilateral meeting. The Secretary-General will be accompanied by UN Under-Secretaries-General Rosemary DiCarlo and Jean-Pierre Lacroix. This visit marks the first time a UN Secretary-General has traveled to the island since Ban Ki-moon in 2010. During his stay, Guterres is also scheduled to meet with technical committees and civil society organizations. Meanwhile, UN Special Representative Kasim Diagne is providing briefings to the Security Council regarding the latest reports on the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the Secretary-General's good offices. While government sources in Nicosia have acknowledged receiving inquiries about the visit, they have referred all formal announcements to the United Nations. Reports also note that UN personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin is expected to be present during the visit, despite potential schedule adjustments.
