Two Greek Cypriots detained in the north of Cyprus
Two Greek Cypriot nationals, a man and a woman, were arrested by Turkish Cypriot authorities on July 12, 2026. According to reports, the individuals entered the northern part of Cyprus via the Limnitis crossing point without completing required entry procedures. They were subsequently arrested while attempting to return to the government-controlled areas through the Astromeritis crossing point. The authorities in the north have accused them of violating a military restricted zone and failing to follow immigration protocols. A military court in the north ordered a three-day remand, which was later extended for an additional two days. Turkish Cypriot authorities noted that a document suggesting one individual served as a reserve officer in the National Guard was found in their possession. The government of the Republic of Cyprus is monitoring the situation and coordinating through the bicommunal committee to secure their release. The next court hearing is scheduled for Thursday, July 16.
