Waste facility collapse in India kills nine workers
Nine employees died after a massive pile of waste collapsed at a waste-to-energy facility in Pune, India. The incident occurred last Wednesday when heavy monsoon rains destabilized a mountain of garbage, causing it to fall onto a facility building. According to the operating company, Antony Waste Handling Cell, a total of 23 workers were initially trapped by the debris. Nine of these individuals were confirmed dead, while three others remained hospitalized according to reporting from the Times of India. The company attributed the structural failure of the building to the unprecedented volume of waste being destabilized by persistent rainfall. Operations at the plant have been suspended indefinitely as a result of the tragedy. India frequently experiences severe floods and landslides during the summer monsoon season, events that scientists note are increasing in intensity due to climate change.
