Cyprus launches upgrade to next-generation emergency 112 system
The Civil Defence of Cyprus has signed a contract with the national telecommunications authority, Cyta, to implement the 'Next Generation 112' (NG112) emergency system. This project is expected to be completed within 20 months and aims to harmonize the Republic of Cyprus with European technological and regulatory standards for emergency communications. The new system will function as a unified national response center, supporting all emergency services including the police, fire department, ambulance services, and national guard. Key technical improvements include the ability to process real-time text messages, images, video feeds, precise location data, and automatic eCall alerts from vehicles. By facilitating the management of multi-media data, the upgrade is intended to provide first responders with more accurate information during critical incidents. Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou described the project as a strategically important investment that will improve the efficiency, speed, and quality of emergency response operations. The system is designed to allow for the modernized handling of all emergency communications at a national level.
