Cyprus updates implementation timeline for the EU AI Act
The Law Office of the Republic of Cyprus has informed the House Human Rights Committee of a revised implementation timeline for the European Union's Artificial Intelligence Act. While the legislation was initially set for application on August 2, 2026, the new schedule shifts deadlines for high-risk AI systems. Standalone high-risk AI systems must now comply by December 2, 2027. Systems embedded within products are subject to a deadline of August 2, 2028. According to the Law Office, these changes were made by EU co-legislators to prioritize technical regulation. Cyprus must now draft national implementing laws to ensure the regulation aligns with European standards and guidelines. Committee chair Christos Christofides announced these updates during a session dedicated to Digital Human Rights.
