Wildfires and heatwaves impact Western Europe
As Western Europe endures its third heatwave of the season, a major wildfire has broken out in the Fontainebleau forest near Paris, burning approximately 1,300 hectares. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated the fire, which started at multiple points, is considered suspicious, leading to at least two arrests. The blaze forced the closure of the A6 highway, disrupted high-speed rail services, and caused the evacuation of about 900 residents. Meanwhile, in Spain, the death toll from a separate wildfire in Almeria has risen to 13, with 10 people still reported missing. Temperatures across the region are significantly above seasonal averages, with Italy bracing for highs of up to 44 degrees Celsius in Sardinia. Scientists attribute these extreme events to climate change, noting that over 32,000 hectares have already burned in France this year alone. Recent heatwaves have resulted in more than 10,000 excess deaths across Europe and Britain, according to climate monitoring data.
