Residents of Kathari in Larnaca report issues with stagnant water in flood-control channel

Residents of the Kathari area in Larnaca are complaining about stagnant water, foul odors, and mosquito infestations in a local flood-control channel. The water accumulation has persisted despite cleaning efforts carried out last Friday by the Larnaca Municipality. Local residents attribute the current delay in maintenance to changes implemented under the recent Local Government Reform, contrasting it with previous years when the District Administration handled the task promptly. Beyond the sanitary concerns, residents have reported safety hazards caused by damaged fencing along the channel. Municipal authorities suspect the water originates from the Aradippou area and are working to identify the exact source. The Cleaning Department of Larnaca Municipality has pledged to conduct further cleaning operations in sections where water levels remain high. The channel was originally constructed to protect the Livadia area from flooding, extending from the Larnaca Technical School to the sea.
