Hellenic Navy frigate Nikiforos Fokas replaces Elli in Cyprus
The Hellenic Navy frigate Nikiforos Fokas (F-466) has officially begun a maritime security deployment off the coast of Cyprus, replacing the frigate Elli. The mission follows a nearly 100-day patrol conducted by the crew of the Elli, as confirmed by Cyprus Defence Ministry spokesman Christos Pieris. The Nikiforos Fokas is equipped with the Kentavros counter-drone system, consistent with previous deployments including the Kimon and Psara frigates. This sustained Greek naval presence was initiated in March following a drone attack on the British military base at Akrotiri. The vessel was originally commissioned by the Royal Netherlands Navy before joining the Hellenic Navy in 2003. While Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias indicated that assets would remain as long as necessary, Cyprus Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas emphasized that the deployment is temporary and subject to ongoing regional security assessments.
