Cyprus expands technical middle schools and integrates AI in education

The Cypriot Cabinet has approved the expansion of the technical middle school program to Paphos and free Famagusta starting in September. Minister of Education Athina Michaelidou announced that this move follows the success of pilot programs in Nicosia and Limassol, aiming to prepare students for modern technical professions. Additionally, the Ministry is launching pedagogical actions to integrate artificial intelligence into primary and secondary education. Authorities clarified that while mobile phone use is restricted in schools, this policy does not hinder the educational use of technology. The Minister emphasized that educators are being trained to use AI ethically and effectively. Furthermore, the Ministry is addressing infrastructure safety concerns by implementing building upgrades and establishing a comprehensive building program. Meanwhile, the Minister defended the importance of open dialogue with teacher unions, such as POED, regarding new appointment systems. The government is also coordinating with the European Union on the implementation of the AI Act and a national digital strategy to improve Cyprus’s ranking in digital skills.
