Cyprus power grid demand expected to be met despite summer heat
Charas Kousiappa, spokesperson for the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO), stated on Tuesday that the country's power supply is currently sufficient to meet increased demand caused by high temperatures. On Monday, electricity demand reached 1,156 MW at 14:30 and remained at 921 MW by 20:00. Officials project that peak total demand for the summer season will range between 1,260 and 1,300 MW. During the evening peak, when the system relies primarily on conventional power generation, demand is expected to be between 1,060 and 1,090 MW. Kousiappa cautioned that this assessment depends on the reliability of production units, which are currently under heavy strain due to heat. She noted that if unforeseen technical failures occur, the TSO cannot guarantee full coverage and would have to initiate emergency protocols. Currently, high daytime demand is partially offset by contributions from renewable energy sources.
