Nikos Anastasiou resigns as president of EDEK
Nikos Anastasiou officially announced his resignation from the presidency of the EDEK party on Tuesday. This decision comes 50 days after the national legislative elections, where the party secured 3.3% of the vote. In his statement, Anastasiou acknowledged his failure to unite the party and take responsibility for the election results. He attempted to resolve internal party disputes by convening several governing bodies, including the Central Committee, the Political Bureau, and an extraordinary national congress open to all members. Despite these efforts, he noted that internal tensions remained high, characterizing the atmosphere as one where hostility persists. He thanked his colleagues and the 56 candidates who participated in the campaign. His resignation is intended to allow new leadership to attempt to unify the party. He emphasized the need for self-criticism and accountability to rebuild the organization.
