Spanish court issues ruling against David Sanchez, brother of the Prime Minister

David Sanchez, the 52-year-old brother of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, has been barred from holding any public office for nine years. A court ruled that his 2017 appointment to a position in the Badajoz province was neither necessary nor urgent and served personal interests rather than the public good. The court convicted him of administrative misconduct but acquitted him of charges related to illicit influence peddling, which could have carried a prison sentence. The trial, involving multiple defendants, concluded in early June following proceedings held in May. While the court condemned the appointment as an unethical practice detrimental to democratic values, David Sanchez maintains his innocence and plans to appeal. The public prosecutor's office had originally requested his acquittal. Government spokesperson Elma Saiz expressed hope that higher courts would eventually confirm his innocence. This legal development adds political pressure to the administration of Pedro Sanchez.
