Parliamentary review of citizenship application for Bora Markovic

Photographer and content creator Bora Markovic has been seeking Cypriot citizenship for 30 years after residing in the country since the 1990s. Despite his long-term residency and contributions to promoting Cyprus abroad, his naturalization applications have been repeatedly denied. AKEL MP Christos Christofides states that rejections stem from a bureaucratic gap in his residency records from when Markovic was a minor. Christofides urged Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou to consider an honorary naturalization based on public interest or humanitarian grounds. The Minister acknowledged the request in a July 13, 2026 response, noting that citizenship is governed by Articles 111(1) and 111B of the Civil Registry Law. Ioannou stated that he remains open to the possibility of granting citizenship provided that all legal criteria are met. The House of Representatives has requested an update on the status of his case and potential referral to the Council of Ministers.
