Russian politician Boris Nadezhdin detained following foreign agent designation
Anti-war politician Boris Nadezhdin was detained by police in Dolgoprudny, north of Moscow, on Monday for questioning. The detention followed the Russian Ministry of Justice's decision last Friday to designate him a 'foreign agent.' Authorities accused Nadezhdin of sharing a link on social media containing content alleged to be extremist. His lawyer stated the accusations involve the display of extremist symbols, though specifics remain unclear. Nadezhdin, who served in the State Duma from 1999 to 2003, previously had his 2024 presidential bid rejected by the electoral commission due to alleged signature irregularities. He is currently attempting to gather sufficient signatures to run for the State Duma in the upcoming September elections. Nadezhdin characterizes these actions as a state-led effort to obstruct his political campaign and silence his criticism of the war in Ukraine, internet restrictions, and domestic issues. He maintains that the authorities aim to prevent him from winning a seat in parliament to continue his opposition activities.
