Donald Trump pays 5.6 million dollars in damages to E. Jean Carroll
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has paid 5.6 million dollars in damages to writer E. Jean Carroll following a 2023 civil court ruling. A jury found Trump liable for sexual assault and defamation regarding an incident that occurred in a New York department store in 1996. The payment follows a federal judge's order and the Supreme Court's refusal to hear an appeal in late June. Carroll, an 82-year-old former journalist, first alleged the assault in her 2019 book, prompting Trump to label her claims a hoax. In a separate defamation case, a court ordered Trump to pay 83.3 million dollars, a verdict currently under appellate review. The payment of the 5.6 million dollars was confirmed by Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan. This concludes the financial requirements of the initial civil verdict.
