Migrant boat capsizes off Libyan coast near Tobruk
At least 50 people, including women and children, are feared dead following the capsizing of a wooden migrant boat off the eastern coast of Libya on Tuesday. Security sources stated that the vessel was carrying more than 60 passengers from various sub-Saharan African countries. Ten survivors were rescued near the islet of El Barda, located approximately 70 kilometers northwest of Tobruk. Additionally, on Monday, rescue teams retrieved 24 irregular migrants and recovered four bodies in a separate incident near Tobruk involving a vessel that had been adrift for nearly two weeks. Since 2011, Libya has served as a primary departure point for migrants seeking to reach Europe. The ongoing instability continues to facilitate these dangerous maritime crossings. Authorities are currently managing the recovery and rescue efforts in the region near the Egyptian border.
