Electoral dispute in Cyprus leads to calls for system reform
Anastasia Anthousi has filed a petition with the Election Court in Cyprus requesting a recount of votes at a specific polling station in Nikitari, Nicosia. Elikkos Ilias, Director General of the Ministry of Interior, stated that the Ministry will comply if the Supreme Court orders a recount. While the petition focuses on this specific station, Ilias highlighted that the results have affected multiple candidates across the country, including Evi Tsolaki, Michalis Michael, and Konstantinos Kyprianou. He also emphasized the need for the House of Representatives to review the electoral system, particularly the second seat allocation process. Ilias described the recent legislative elections as stressful for candidates due to rapid shifts in seat distribution. He noted instances where candidates were elected with very few personal votes, such as the case of Dimitris Baros in Paphos. The court's ruling will determine whether any adjustments to the final results are necessary.
