Escalation in hostilities between Russia and Ukraine mid-July 2026
Recent military activity saw intense cross-border strikes between Russia and Ukraine around July 16-17, 2026. In Odessa, Russian missile strikes on residential and civilian infrastructure resulted in two deaths and eight injuries. Simultaneously, Kyiv and Kharkiv faced attacks involving ballistic missiles and drones, causing two additional deaths in the capital. Conversely, Ukraine targeted Russian oil tankers, including the Louise 1 and Banda, and reportedly destroyed the Russian patrol ship Emerald near Gelendzhik using a naval drone. Russian authorities reported 375 downed Ukrainian drones across 15 regions and Crimea, while also confirming strikes on military-industrial facilities in Kyiv and port infrastructure in Odessa and Pivdennyi. These engagements occur amid a broader escalation that has significantly impacted grain exports from Odessa. The violence follows a visit to Kyiv by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
